Photoelectric and interconnected
Photoelectric alarms sense the slow, smouldering smoke that starts most house fires, often from wiring, a charger or a couch, well before there are flames. That's why Fire and Rescue NSW recommends them over the older ionisation type, which reacts to flames but nuisance-trips on toast and ends up ripped off the ceiling.
Interconnected means every alarm in the home is linked, wired or wireless, so smoke in the garage sounds the alarm in the far bedroom too. On a single stand-alone alarm, a fire at the other end of the house can be well advanced before anyone hears it. It's the single biggest improvement you can make to your escape time.

Where alarms go, and why it matters
Getting the number of alarms right is only half the job. Where they go decides whether they warn you in time. Smoke rises, so alarms belong on the ceiling, away from corners and gaps where the air stalls, and clear of the kitchen and bathroom where cooking steam and shower moisture cause nuisance triggers.
The most important alarms are the ones on the path between the bedrooms and the way out, because that's the escape route you need covered early. The questions that come up on this job more than any other.
Yes. Hardwired alarms are wired into your 240V mains, so by law they have to be installed and replaced by a licensed electrician in NSW. Battery-only alarms you can fit yourself, and you should rather than have none, but hardwired and interconnected systems are licensed electrical work. We're licensed for this work.
Replace every 10 years and test every 6 months. The manufacture date is printed on the base or side of the detector, so check it. After 10 years the sensor degrades whether or not the alarm still beeps, which is why the replace-by date matters more than a working test button.
Test every 6 months by holding the test button until it sounds, and vacuum the alarm to keep dust out. If your alarms are interconnected, testing one should sound them all. Replace any removable battery yearly, or the whole unit if it's a 10-year sealed alarm past its date.
Photoelectric alarms detect the smouldering, smoky fires most common in homes, and Fire and Rescue NSW recommends them. Ionisation alarms respond faster to flaming fires but are prone to nuisance triggering from cooking. We fit photoelectric alarms as standard.
Interconnected means all your alarms are linked, so when one detects smoke every alarm in the house sounds. It gives everyone, including anyone asleep at the far end of the home, the earliest possible warning. It's strongly recommended and it's the upgrade that buys the most time in a real fire.
Landlords have to ensure a working smoke alarm on every level, test and maintain them, replace any that don't work, and replace batteries yearly for removable ones or the whole unit for 10-year sealed alarms. We handle installation, testing and certification so your rental meets its obligations.
A single chirp every minute or so usually means a flat battery, a unit past its 10-year life, or dust in the sensor. Try a fresh battery and a vacuum first. If it keeps chirping, or the alarm is over 10 years old, it needs replacing.
