Is it safe to wait until morning?

Answer a few quick questions and we'll tell you straight. Sometimes the answer is that it can wait, and we'd rather say so than charge you a call-out at midnight.

If there is fire or smoke, or someone has been shocked, call 000 first. Do not use this page.

  1. Can you smell burning, see smoke, or see sparking?

Includes a burning smell near the switchboard, a powerpoint or a light fitting.

  2. Has anyone had a shock, or is a switch, plug or fitting hot to touch?

A tingle off a tap or an appliance counts.

  3. Is there damaged or exposed wiring, or water getting near the switchboard or powerpoints?

Storm damage, a hit cable, or a leak above the board.

  4. What is actually happening?

Turn it off and call now

What you have described is not one to sit on. It needs a licensed electrician tonight.

  • If you can safely reach the switchboard, switch off the affected circuit, or the main switch.
  • Do not touch the fitting, the board or any damaged wiring.
  • If there is fire or smoke, or someone has been shocked, call 000 first.

Or leave your number and we will call you straight back.

We call you back. If it cannot wait, ring 0412 424 596.

Worth getting looked at today

That usually is not dangerous on its own, but it does not fix itself and it can point at something that matters. Best sorted today rather than left.

  • Leave the affected circuit switched off at the board until it is looked at.
  • If the whole place is out, check whether your neighbours have power too. If the street is out it is the network, not your wiring, and there is nothing to pay me for.
  • If anything changes, a burning smell, a shock, sparking, stop and call straight away.

Or tell us what is happening and we will come back with a fixed price.

We call you back. If it cannot wait, ring 0412 424 596.

Usually not an emergency

That is normally an ordinary job rather than a middle-of-the-night one. Book it in and it gets sorted properly, at a fixed price, with the same guarantee as everything else.

  • Leave it switched off at the board or at the wall until it is looked at.
  • If anything changes, a burning smell, a shock, sparking, stop and call straight away.

Or tell us what is happening and we will come back with a fixed price.

We call you back. If it cannot wait, ring 0412 424 596.

This is general guidance, not a substitute for a licensed electrician looking at it. If you're not sure, call. We'd rather answer the phone than have you guess.

What happens when you call

  1. You get us, not a call centre

Ring 0412 424 596 any hour. Tell us what's happening and we'll tell you straight whether it's safe to wait until morning.

  2. We triage it on the phone

We talk you through making the area safe, work out whether it's your wiring or a street outage, and sort what we need to bring.

  3. Same-day fix

Same-day emergency service. You get a fixed quote before we start, then we repair the fault on the spot wherever parts allow.

  4. Certificate and clean up

You get the compliance paperwork, a tidy site and a lifetime workmanship guarantee. If it points to a bigger problem, we quote that separately.

What to do while you wait for us

If you can smell burning, see sparking or spot scorch marks, switch that circuit off at the switchboard. If you're not sure which circuit it is, hit the main switch. If there's smoke or flames, get everyone out and call 000 first, then call us. For a plain power loss with nothing burning, you're usually safe to sit tight.

  • Unplug the appliances on the affected circuit.
  • Keep water away from anything sparking.
  • Don't touch damaged, exposed or wet wiring.
  • Don't keep resetting a safety switch. It's tripping for a reason.
  • Leave the switchboard as it is so we can see what tripped.

Is it your wiring, or the street?

Two checks tell you a lot. Look outside and see whether your neighbours have lights on or the whole street is dark. Then open your switchboard and see whether a safety switch or the main switch has tripped.

Macarthur sits inside the Endeavour Energy network, so a street or suburb outage is theirs to restore and you report it to them directly. If the power loss stops at your boundary, or a safety switch trips the second you reset it, the fault is inside your home. That one's our job. Not sure which it is? Call us and we'll talk you through it.

Emergencies we fix, day or night

These are the calls we get most at night. If it involves power and it doesn't feel right, ring us anyway. We'd rather talk it through and tell you it can wait until morning than have you sitting next to something dangerous.

Total power loss

If the lights are out and it isn't the street, it's usually the main switch, a failed safety switch or the supply side. We find the fault, fix what's on your side, and tell you straight if it's Endeavour Energy's to restore.

A safety switch that keeps tripping

An RCD that trips the moment you reset it means something is wrong on a circuit. We trace the faulty appliance or wiring instead of flicking it back on.

Blown fuses and dead circuits

Older ceramic-fuse boards fail under modern loads. We get the circuit live safely and tell you straight if the board is due for an upgrade.

Burning smell or sparking

Scorch marks at a powerpoint or the switchboard mean melting insulation. Turn it off and call us straight away. This one is a genuine emergency.

Storm and water damage

Wind, flooding or a fallen line can leave wiring exposed or wet. We make it safe, test the affected circuits and repair what the weather knocked out.

No hot water or a faulty appliance

A tripped element or thermostat can take out your hot water or the whole house. We find the fault and get the essentials running again.

Why your safety switch keeps tripping

A safety switch that won't reset is doing its job. An RCD cuts the power the instant it detects current leaking to earth, which is what happens when an appliance fails, a cable is damaged or moisture gets into a circuit.

Don't keep forcing it back on. You'd be overriding the one device protecting your household from a shock. Unplug everything on that circuit and reset it once. If it holds, the last thing you unplugged is the likely culprit. If it trips again with nothing plugged in, the fault is in the wiring and it needs a licensed electrician. We trace the actual cause instead of resetting it and leaving.
